REPORT ON MYSTERY TRIP HELD ON 21ST MAY 2026
It was a perfect autumnal day in Adelaide – blue sky, no breeze, not chilly.
The following 19 participants arrived at Thorndon Park Reserve in Paradise ready to start a drive to a destination as yet unknown to them:
Keith, Yvonne, Pat & Chris, Jacquie, Barry & Chris, Lesley & Wayne, Bob, JB & Dilys, Kevin & Irene, Meredith & Roger, Katrina & Peter, & Greg.
The latter 5 people were welcomed to their first mystery trip and for the latter 3 it was their first attendance at a Group event. It was particularly pleasing to see JB & Dilys still involved, having been inaugural members of the Group which formed in 1990 under the auspices of ARPA (Australian Retired Persons Association).
From about 10:30 we set off when ready using 9 vehicles and proceeded at a leisurely pace, following a supplied set of directions to get to the mystery destination for lunch.
The route included many narrow and winding roads with good quality bitumen or gravel surfaces. Fortunately, recent rain had done no damage. It began with a climb up Montacute road, then turning off at Pound Rd to Knott’s Hill Rd, a climb up the narrow gravel surface of Blockers Rd and onto Mawson Rd. This tour took us
through the pristine fruit growing areas in the Lenswood region. Apple orchards and
vineyards were particularly prominent. Remnants of autumn colours against a
predominantly green background made for a very pretty drive.

Roads were “off the beaten track”, and only two motorists and a cyclist were encountered along the way.

We stopped for a break at a small WW1 memorial on Lobethal Rd before continuing on to discover that the mystery destination was Uraidla, where lunch was enjoyed at the iconic hotel there. We were joined at lunch by Lesley Str who did not do the drive.

It was a very enjoyable day taking participants on roads not before travelled to sights not before seen in a relaxed format with an interesting group of like-minded people. The hotel menu was quite extensive, the food delicious and staff very friendly.
Apologies received from some who had initially intended to participate but had to withdraw for various reasons: Imants & Ludmila, Les & Brenda, Raelene & Rodney.
Trip prepared and organized by Keith & Yvonne, with help in early stages from Keith’s family.
